Vertebral Compression Fracture

A vertebral compression fracture occurs when one of the bones in the spine collapses. Weakened bone, including osteoporosis, is one possible cause.

What symptoms can it cause?

It may cause sudden back pain, particularly after a fall or a relatively small movement. A clinician may recommend imaging to confirm the fracture and check for other causes of pain.

Will it heal without an operation?

Many fractures improve with time and do not need surgery. Pain relief, gradual activity, a brace in some cases, and treatment for osteoporosis may all form part of your care.

If pain remains severe, imaging may help establish whether the fracture is likely to respond to a procedure. Vertebroplasty places cement into the bone to stabilise it. Kyphoplasty uses a balloon, and sometimes a stent, before cement is placed. Suitability depends on the type and age of the fracture and your overall health.

New leg weakness, bladder or bowel symptoms, fever, or severe pain after significant injury needs urgent medical assessment.
