Cervical Radiculopathy: A Trapped Nerve in the Neck

Cervical radiculopathy occurs when a nerve leaving the neck becomes irritated or compressed.

What does it feel like?

Pain may travel from the neck or shoulder into an arm or hand. You may also notice tingling, numbness or weakness. The pattern of symptoms can help identify which nerve may be affected.

A disc prolapse or age-related narrowing around the nerve can be responsible.

Will it improve?

Many cases improve without surgery. Treatment may include advice about activity, pain relief and physiotherapy. An MRI may be useful when symptoms persist, weakness develops or an intervention is being considered.

For selected patients, a cervical nerve root injection may help with arm pain. If symptoms remain severe or there is concerning weakness, surgery may be discussed. Depending on the cause and location of compression, this may be performed from the front or back of the neck.

When should I seek prompt help?

Seek prompt assessment if weakness is developing. New problems with balance, walking or hand coordination may indicate a different condition affecting the spinal cord.
